The Cure to Kitchen Counter Clutter

Updated: Jun 26, 2021

What is the key to instantly making your kitchen feel less cluttered??

Answer: Clear off the counters

Easy peasy right?!

What is that you say?, “I can’t clear the counters because I have no space to put everything away”

There are typically 3 reasons one finds themselves in this dilemma-

1. You have too many things

I find that my clients feel the most accomplished when they downsize or purge. It seems like more work, but in the end it will make the organizational process much easier. If you have too

many items in your cabinet, it won’t matter how great you are at Tetris, it will be a game of Jenga every time you need to get something out. Best thing to do, is lay your items out and get rid of duplicates, broken items, and things you honestly just don’t use.

2. Your items are not optimally organized

Alright, so you don’t have that many things, but they still don’t seem to fit all in the drawers and cabinets. This is where your problem solving and puzzle skills come in. You want to find ways to make the most of your space. Find ways to categorize items together in buckets, bins, or other storage solutions that will contain them, to prevent everything from rolling around and falling all over the place. Make sure you don’t forget about using vertical space. Add extra shelves or stackable items to make the most of your space.

3. You are wasting space with packaging

This is one that is often overlooked. Boxes and packaging take up more space than most items themselves. Take for example 3 boxes of granola bars, they will need much more space in your pantry than if you took them out and put them into a bin. The added benefit? The bin can be clear, allowing you to see your inventory and no one can leave an empty granola bar box in your cabinet, giving you false hope lol.

Now this doesn’t mean your counters have to be completely bare, unless you prefer it that way. Display a few things that are either aesthetically pleasing or something you use often. Bonus points if they fall into both of those categories. If you want to keep your cooking utensils out for easy access, find a cute cup to display them in. Like to leave your cookbooks out? Find lovely bookends or a basket to keep them in. Putting your items in clear, glass or matching containers, allows you to leave them out without causing it to feel cluttered. Another benefit to having clear counters, is that it is easier to actually cook and prepare food. Here is to a clutter-free kitchen you can use and enjoy!
